Summary:

Few quick words and thanks from me first.....Firstly thanks again to Jim Farrow for all his work before the finals in organising the entries, seeding, schedules and sending out times for everyone. This championship would not happen without Jim's effort, and dedication, and he puts on loads of hours of his own time in making this happen, as does our chairman John Leith, and other members of the committee.
Friday night & Sunday night helpers for setting up on Friday evening, and helping pack up Sunday we do appreciate this apologies if I have forgotten anyone (Richard G, Nigel H, Andy W, Pauline, Elliot & Steve, Dave F, Colin B, Paul B, Brian J, Sean G, Jason A)
Thanks for all those who helped me on the control desk during the 2 days, especially Pauline, Clair & Karen. You are all hired for next year as well as well if you want it!!
Steve for all you photos, and Bob Watts for all his umpiring during the weekend, including the finals evening. Thanks as well to Wayne & Karen in assisting with the umpiring, and for Jessica & Ellen with their help in scoring the finals.
On the table tennis we had another good turnout for the weekend, with only a couple of people dropping out. Sorry about the lighting for first few hours on Saturday morning. If we had known on the control desk earlier that all the lights were not on, we would have got them switched on earlier!! Table eight we know was an issue, but to play all the matches we had we needed to use this table, else we would not have completed Saturday schedule.
Our performance award, for the weekend, went to Alex King.
Two other players who appear to do well in everything, and threaten to mess up our schedule was Tony Clarke on the Saturday, and Andy Warner on the Sunday, who towards the end of Sunday had to play five consecutive matches, including the last 3 semi finals played Sunday afternoon.
Hope we see you all next year.
Regards, Mike Wright

Report:

Sparkes & Collins retain Singles Titles

Aimee Sparkes & Ryan Collins won the ladies and men's titles, respectively, and in doing so retained their titles.
Aimee's opponent in the ladies this year was Sonya Talbot who last won the title in 2002. The first game started with both players closely matched, but from 7-7 all Aimee showed greater control to win next 4 points, and take the first game. In the next game Aimee pulled ahead, thus causing Sonya to be more positive in her attack. Sonya pulling the game back to 9-8, before 2 strong backhands from Aimee gave her the game and a 2-0 lead. The third mirrored the first game, but again went to Aimee's as her more positive play towards the end of the game, gave her the title with a 3-0 win.

Ryan Collins won his fifth Ipswich men's title, beating number 2 seed, and recent Colchester champion Jake Collins in what for once was a fairly low key final.

In the first game, there was never more than 2 points in it, as both players attacked positively, but from 9-9 two excellent short return of serve from Ryan saw him take the first game 11-9. In the 2nd game Ryan raced into a 4-0 lead, which on the back of some very strong serving he never relinquished to take the 2nd game 11-7. The third game saw some of the best play of the final, as both players winning points with superb cross court shots from both wings. However Ryan again held the ascendancy in the game and despite missing one match point Ryan won on his 2nd, to take the 3rd 11-9, and the title with a 3-0 win.

Progressing to the final both Ryan and Jake had comfortable 3-0 wins over Andy Warner and Paul Broxton respectively in the semi-finals.

The men's doubles saw the Ryan & Jake Collins claim their eighth consecutive title as they held off a spirited performance by Andy Warner & Nigel Hodder to win 3-0.

The ladies doubles saw a repeat of last year's final with Aimee Sparkes, and Claire Westlake again up against Sonja Talbot & Rosemary Curtis. Things looked comfortable for Aimee & Clair as they easily took the first 11-3, however with some positive play Sonja & Rosemary then took the 2nd 11-6. From the start of the 3rd Aimee & Clair started to prove too strong for their opponents as they comfortably took the next 2 games 11-3 & 11-6 to win their sixth title.

The mixed doubles gave us the best match of the evening, as Ryan Collins & Claire Westlake came from 2-1 down against Jake Collins & Aimee Sparkes to win 17-15 in the fifth. Amazingly from 9-9 both pair's shared 6 match points before Ryan & Clair retained there title on their 4th match point!

The junior final saw two new faces this year, but ones I am sure we will see plenty off in the future as Alex King played Daniel Shelley. An entertaining first game, saw Daniel just edge it 13-11. His confidence increased from taking the first game saw Daniel run out an easy winner in the next 2, to win his first junior title.

Once again the restricted final provided some of the best entertainment of the night, as Mike Tracey raced into a 2-0 lead over Clair Westlake, only for Clair to pull the match back to 2-2. But some good attacking play from Mike saw him hold his nerve to take the deciding set 11-5.

The veteran's final, saw Dave Cole gain his first Ipswich veterans title has he withstood a spirited performance from Andy Dosher to win in 4 games.
